Digital Extremes is a Canadian video game development studio founded in 1993 by James Schmalz and headquartered in London, Ontario. Digital Extremes is mainly known for its collaboration with Epic Games in the Unreal series.

Epic Games, formerly Epic MegaGames (also known as Epic), is an American video game development studio based in Cali, North Carolina. The studio is partly owned by Chinese internet giant Tencent (40 percent).

Founded in 1991, Epic MegaGames released its first game the same year: ZZT. The following 3 years, Epic released the Epic Pinball games in 1993 (pinball game developed by Digital Extremes) 1 and two platform games developed and published by Epic: Jazz Jackrabbit in 1994 and Jill of the Jungle in 1992.
